Corpus Christi 50
Picture 50 of 56
If you wanted to ‘catch a husband’, it was a good idea to join the Sodality of the Children of Mary. The women members were regarded as ‘nice girls’ and so excellent wife material, though as one ex-member remarked, ‘we were meant to be good but we weren’t’! Women who joined the sodality paraded in their distinctive blue cloaks during the Corpus Christi parade in June, from the creamery to Egmont House, where they would say the Rosary. The Children of Mary had to promise to be virtuous, and faithful to God. It was a privilege to be a member. When girls joined they were given a medal. They were to keep it through life and be buried with it. [Rosemary Canavan, ‘Storyspace Exhibition’, Kanturk Arts Festival 2012]
